An interview with Nelson Wedding Celebrant, Veronica Hippolite-A’Court:
Q: When it comes to wedding vows, are there any legal requirements that couples need to be aware of?
VHA: The only legal requirement is that at some point in the ceremony, the couple must state their full names and that they take each other to be wed. I suggest couples to do this as their declaration of intent, which leaves the vows to be more personal.
Q: Are couples stepping away from traditional vows with a preference for writing their own?
VHA: Absolutely! In my experience as a Nelson Wedding Celebrant, I find that most couples use this opportunity to express their feelings for one another and make their promises according to their beliefs and values.
Q: Is there a way couples can combine traditional wedding vows with an updated twist?
VHA: Yes, I will often provide couples with a wedding planner which gives suggestions to vows. The couple can then use these suggestions or mix and match with more traditional vows to reflect their relationship.
Q: Where can people search for inspiration to help them write wedding vows?
VHA: While couples can be tempted to search Google, and it can be a good place to start. My real advice is to search your heart for the right words for you!
Q: As a Wedding Celebrant how do you help couples fine-tune their wedding vows?
VHA: I will always help out where required, but often my couples will already have a fair idea of what they want to say. I might help them structure this and make it easier for them to express their feelings.
Q: Should the couple share their vows with each other before the ceremony?
VHA: This is a personal choice, most couples prefer to keep them a lovely surprise until the day. Many laughs and tears are shared over vows.
Q: What are your top three tips to help couples write perfect wedding vows?
VHA: Speak it from your heart, look at your betrothed when you’re speaking them, and finally, remember there is no right or wrong as long as something is said in love.
